Breeding Cattle including Sussex Cattle Societies Spring Show and Sale of Pedigree
Cattle -
Report on trade: This was an interesting sale
for the followers of the Sussex breed with a mixed quality entry of stock and the
best breeders seeing a strong trade for both bulls and females and a proportion of
other stock meeting a solid commercial interest. Bull breeders were well rewarded
with interest in good bulls very strong and it is very rewarding to see buyers coming
to the Society Sales again with the confidence to bid for good stock. High health
status is another talking point within the breed and taking the correct disease precautions
within herds is definitely a plus when it comes to selling stock.
Pre sale show judging of bulls and females was undertaken by Bill Peters of Oxted
and he awarded Champion Bull to the Goldstone bred Regent 4th (bn April 2009) from
Chandler and Dunn Ltd, Ash, Canterbury, Kent and Reserve card went C E and W S Millson's
Trottenden Glow worm 3rd bred at their base in the village of Goudhurst near Tunbridge
Wells while females were headed by L Stevens and Sons, Sittingbourne with their March
2009 born maiden heifer Boxted Finch 76th.
The sale commenced with mature females and the oldest cow entered took top call –
the Maplesden (Sussex Beef Producers) bred Godinton 7th, born in 1999 with her Mayfield
Wellington sired heifer calf made 800gns to the Bowes Lyon Estate, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
Bulls came next – seniors first and a Boxted bred bull made 2.700gns for the Titsey
Estate, Oxted and then top call and breed auction record price of 5,500 gns was paid
by Leconfield Estates, Petworth, West Sussex for the Goldstone bred champion while
the Trottenden reserve made 3,200 gns and was purchased by M J P and S Williams from
Helstone, Cornwall. Leconfield Estates sold 2 Petworth Duke bulls (8th and 10th)
at 2,700 and 2,900 gns and L Stevens and Sons 2 Boxted males for 2,100 and 2,600.
The maiden females section started with the eldest when 2 Shepden heifers making
750 and 740 gns for Russell Denyer and Ralph Sheppard; Wright Farm Partnership saw
their heifers bred on Romney Marsh make from 800 to 880 gns but it was the 2 high
health status consignments which took the pick of the trade. First in the ring were
the Millson's Trottenden heifers and 9 made from 900 to 1350 gns to 6 different buyers
and then the Stevens’ Boxted heifers made from 840 to 1575 gns the top price being
paid for the days Champion Female by Howard King from Bines Green near Horsham in
West Sussex. In the younger section the Aylesford prefix stood to the fore as it
has for many, many years and 700 and 710gns was paid by Mr S W Borlase from Henley
on Thames for Snowdrop 5th and Poll Mabel 23rd both September 2009 born and sired
